How to remove light tarnish from very old gold plated silverware?

We accidentally tarnished (only a little bit) some very old gold plated silverware given to us by my great-grandmother. It’s beautiful silverware, and it would be a shame if the tarnish had to stay. Is there anyway to remove the tarnish?

  3. Hi – I assume by silverware you mean cutlery (knives, forks etc.) I am in Australia and we say things a bit differently! First thing I would look at is what the source of tarnish is? If it was a chemical then the affect of that chemical may have caused a break down of the plating itself. There should be a “plating service” provider somewhere near you (if you are city based). I’m sure they could have a quick look at it and tell you if it’s too far gone to just clean. Otherwise they may be able to re-plate it for you (but be sure they have some expertise in restoration work before you let them handle it).
